FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

OIT has done its best to create a Web site that anticipates and satisfies our customers' needs. With that goal in mind, we've compiled a list of frequently asked questions. If you do not find an answer to your question here, please contact the Helpdesk at x5210.

We will be transferring the questions sent in our E-mails this past week to this location very soon.  As new questions arise this site will be updated with that information.

Q:  Once I am migrated to Outlook, can I still access Groupwise or Groupwise Web Access?

A:  No, you will not be able to access Groupwise or Groupwise Web Access once your account is migrated to Exchange.

Q:  Will my email from Groupwise be available in Outlook?

A:  Yes, your email will be migrated from Groupwise to Exchange which is accessible through the Outlook client or Outlook Web Access (OWA) at http://webmail.vsu.edu.

Q: When will the Outlook client be set up on my computer? Will my archive be migrated to Outlook?

A:  A team of technicians will begin the Outlook client installation on Monday, August 3rd, and the Groupwise archive will be migrated at this time. Until the Outlook client is set up on your computer, you will need to use Outlook Web Access (OWA) to access your email.  This can be reached from the Trojan Link page via the “Faculty / Staff E-mail” link or directrly via http://webmail.vsu.edu.

Q: Will I have to reenter any of my address book and calendar information, or will it automatically be available in the new system?

A: All calendar items (appointments, reminders, etc.) and address book entries will be migrated from your GroupWise account to your Exchange account. This includes all Personal Address books and your Frequent Contacts.

Q: Will I be able to access my email no matter where I am?

A: Yes. The Online Web Access client (OWA) at http://webmail.vsu.edu in Exchange provides access to the system through a standard web browser such as Internet Explorer. While the GroupWise web access client is significantly different from the full GroupWise desktop client (both in appearance and functionality), the Exchange OWA is very similar in most all respects to the Outlook client. OIT recommends using Internet Explorer 7.x to access the OWA.

Q:  How do I login to Outlook Web Access (OWA)?

A:  The Outlook Web Access (OWA) site can be accessed by directly entering http://webmail.vsu.edu  or by accessing the Faculty/Staff Email System through the VSU Trojan Link.
Use your Active Directory network credentials to login to Outlook Web Access (this is the username and password that you log into your computer with).

Q:    When I use the Outlook Web Access client, how can I view/save my attachments?

A:  When logging into Outlook Web Access from your work computer, select This is a Private Computer to have full access to your attachments.  If you select “Public”, access to your hard drive will be blocked.

Q:  What are the differences between the "Light" and the "Premium" client options in Outlook Web Access (OWA)?

A:  The "Premium" client option is robust and offers the user the best web experience. This option requires a computer running Windows and Internet Explorer 6 or higher. The OWA Premium client offers quick and easy Outlook features in a slick, user-friendly interface similar in layout and function to the Outlook desktop client, and includes great extras like full right-click functionality and auto send/receive.  To use the “Premium” client, you must use Internet Explorer and deselect Use Outlook Web Access Light on the main login screen.

The "Light" client option (Basic version) offers less features. It is more suitable for slower internet connections (dial-up, etc.) and is the selection for non-Internet Explorer browsers, browsers on non-Windows platforms and older versions of Internet Explorer. OWA Light is compatible with most operating systems (including PC and Mac) and also makes access from internet-capable mobile devices a snap.

Q:  What browsers are compatible with Outlook Web Access?

A:  Outlook Web Access (OWA) Light is compatible with:

Firefox, Safari, Opera, Netscape, Internet Explorer 6+

Q:  Will Outlook 2007 training be offered?

A:  Yes, training resources are being identified.  Additional information on training will be provided on this.

Q:  Is there any online training available for the Outlook desktop client?

A:  Yes, Microsoft offers many Outlook 2007 online training courses at http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/training/HA102188671033.aspx

Q:  Is there any online training available for the Outlook Web Access client?

A:  Yes, Microsoft offers an in-depth demo of the Outlook Web Access client at http://www.microsoft.com/exchange/code/OWA/index.html

Q:      How will email be backed up / saved with Outlook?

A:  We have greatly expanded on our backup and recoverability compared to Groupwise.  Additional information will be provided on this.

Q:      If e-mail is unavailable this weekend, does this mean I’ll not receive any messages sent to me during this time?

A:  Absolutely not! While user access to Groupwise will be unavailable this weekend, the email system will still be able to receive messages. No messages will be rejected or lost during the migration period. However, if you are expecting something over the weekend and don’t see it on Monday, please call the Helpdesk at 1-800-630-8917.
